Peptide Therapy at Protocol Health

Before you book

What is peptide therapy?

Peptides are short chains of amino acids. Many act as signals: they bind a receptor and tell a cell or gland to do something it already knows how to do. Peptide therapy uses specific peptides, most of them compounded, for a narrow goal such as prompting the pituitary to release growth hormone (sermorelin) or supporting a recovery plan (BPC-157). The evidence varies enormously from one peptide to the next. Some have human trials; several rest almost entirely on animal studies. At Protocol Health that difference is the first thing your provider explains.

The peptides our providers prescribe
Who is peptide therapy for?

Peptides are considered case by case. They are not a treatment for any disease, and your provider will say so if another option, such as hormone therapy, PRP or a GLP-1 medication, fits your goal better.

  • Active adults with a recovery goal who want physician oversight
  • Adults asking about growth hormone-releasing peptides such as sermorelin
  • Patients building a longevity plan who want an honest read on the evidence
  • People who would rather not buy research-grade peptides online
Peptide safety, FDA status and what the evidence shows

The word peptide covers molecules with very different evidence. Your provider will tell you which group a peptide sits in before you decide.

Never FDA-approved. BPC-157, TB-500, CJC-1295 and ipamorelin have never been FDA-approved for any use, so prescribing them is unapproved use, not off-label use. The FDA has flagged them, when compounded, for possible immune reactions and impurities.

Once approved, now compounded. Sermorelin was FDA-approved as Geref and discontinued by its maker in 2008. What is prescribed now is compounded and not FDA-approved.

Approved for one use. Tesamorelin is FDA-approved (as Egrifta) for one use, HIV-associated lipodystrophy. Compounded tesamorelin is not FDA-approved.

Animal versus human evidence. For several recovery peptides, nearly all the evidence comes from animal and cell studies. Those results are not proof of benefit in people.

Sports testing. BPC-157 is on the World Anti-Doping Agency's prohibited list. Tested athletes should say so at the first visit.

How peptide care works at Protocol Health

Evaluation before any prescription. A provider reviews your goals, history and medications and decides whether a peptide fits at all.

FDA status stated plainly. Each peptide's regulatory status is explained up front: compounded, never approved, or approved for a different use.

Peptide-trained physicians. Care is directed by medical director Richard Dentico, MD. Russell Tigges, MD is certified in peptide management (SSRP).

Labs and follow-up. Blood can be drawn at the Scarsdale clinic, and follow-up visits decide whether a peptide is worth continuing.

How peptide therapy starts at our Scarsdale clinic

The same four steps in the clinic and by telehealth.

  1. Intake and consultation. Tell us your goal, then meet a provider in Scarsdale or by video.
  2. History and labs. Your provider reviews your history and medications and orders labs where they add information.
  3. A recommendation, or a no. If a peptide fits, you hear which one, why, its FDA status and what to watch for. If none fits, you hear that too.
  4. Follow-up. Check-ins decide whether to continue, change course or stop.

Are peptides FDA-approved?

Most of the peptides used in clinics are not. Compounded peptides are not FDA-approved; BPC-157, TB-500, CJC-1295 and ipamorelin have never been approved for any use. Tesamorelin is FDA-approved for one use, and compounded tesamorelin is not.

That depends on your goal, history and the evidence for each peptide, and it is decided at the evaluation. Sometimes the answer is not a peptide at all.
