What vitamin B12 does

Vitamin B12 helps form red blood cells and maintain the nervous system. Deficiency is most common in people over 50, people on vegetarian or vegan diets, people who have had stomach or weight-loss surgery, and people with conditions such as pernicious anemia. When B12 is low, fatigue, weakness and poor concentration can follow, and correcting it is what helps.

Who benefits from B12 injections?

People with confirmed low B12 or a reason they cannot absorb it well.

  • Over 50, or on a vegetarian or vegan diet
  • After stomach or weight-loss surgery
  • Pernicious anemia or another absorption problem
  • Fatigue with a confirmed low level
Will B12 injections give me energy?

If your B12 is low, correcting it may help. If it is normal, extra B12 is unlikely to change how you feel.

Normal levels. Fatigue with normal B12 has another cause worth finding.

Oral versus injection. High-dose oral B12 can work for many people with deficiency; injections suit others.

Not IV. Protocol Health does not offer IV therapy. B12 is given as an injection.

How B12 care works here

Levels checked first. Labs drawn at the Scarsdale clinic show whether B12 is actually low.

Injection or tablet. In a 2018 Cochrane review, high-dose oral B12 raised levels similarly to injections. Your provider explains which suits you.

The cause, too. Low B12 has causes, from diet to absorption problems, and they are looked at.

Follow-up. Levels are rechecked to confirm the plan worked.
