Shockwave Therapy at Protocol Health

Before you book

What is shockwave therapy?

Shockwave therapy sends pulses of acoustic energy through the skin into a painful tendon, joint or soft tissue. The aim is to restart a healing response in tissue that has stalled, without needles, incisions or medication. It is non-surgical and done in the office. It does not work for everyone or every condition, and part of the evaluation is deciding whether it suits your problem or whether PRP, physical therapy or a surgeon is the better answer.

Who is shockwave therapy for?

Shockwave is considered for specific problems after an evaluation. It is not a cure, and results vary.

  • Patients with tendon or soft-tissue pain that has not settled with rest and physical therapy
  • Patients with joint discomfort who want a non-surgical option
  • Men with erectile dysfunction, for whom low-intensity shockwave is performed under physician supervision
  • Patients who can attend a series of in-office sessions in Scarsdale
Shockwave is done at the Scarsdale clinic

Shockwave cannot be done by telehealth. A telehealth visit can still be a starting point for the evaluation.

Pain and injury. Joint discomfort, soft-tissue injuries and tendon or ligament strain are evaluated at the clinic.

Erectile dysfunction. Low-intensity shockwave for ED is a series of short, in-office sessions over several weeks, performed under physician supervision.

Combined with PRP. Some patients are offered shockwave alongside PRP. Every PRP injection at Protocol Health is planned and performed by Richard Dentico, MD.

Why patients ask about shockwave

Non-surgical. No incision, no injection and no general anaesthetic.

In-office sessions. Treatment is a series of short sessions at the Scarsdale clinic.

Part of a regenerative plan. Shockwave can be considered alongside PRP and rehabilitation, planned at a regenerative medicine consultation.

Physician-led clinic. Care is directed by medical director Richard Dentico, MD, a board-certified physiatrist with a sports medicine subspecialty.

How shockwave therapy works at Protocol Health

Every course starts with an evaluation in Scarsdale.

  1. Evaluation. A provider examines the problem and reviews your history and prior treatment.
  2. A plan. If shockwave suits the problem, your provider explains the number of sessions and what to expect.
  3. In-office sessions. Short sessions at the Scarsdale clinic, spread over several weeks.
  4. Review. Progress is reviewed and the plan adjusted, including whether another treatment fits better.
